More than 1.1 million people applied for a spot in the 2026 London Marathon, and with such high demand many were left disappointed. But the good news? London isn’t the only great race in spring. Whether you’re looking for stunning scenery, a flat course, or a marathon with music and culture, we’ve rounded up five excellent alternatives that are still open for entry.
1. Brighton Marathon (UK) – 12 April 2026

This popular seaside marathon takes you through the heart of Brighton and along its iconic promenade. The course includes some gentle inclines early on, but most of the route offers wide, smooth roads and great sea views. Known for its fun, friendly atmosphere and coastal charm, it’s a great choice if you're after a spring race with a lively finish by the beach. More information here.
2. Madrid Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon (Spain) – 26 April 2026

Madrid brings the energy. This race weaves through the Spanish capital’s major sights — including the Royal Palace and Santiago Bernabéu — with live music stages throughout the route. The course has a mix of elevation changes and flat stretches, so it's a great option if you're up for a bit of a challenge in return for big-city atmosphere, sun, and culture. Find out more here.
3. Vienna City Marathon (Austria) – 19 April 2026

With a route that winds past Vienna’s most famous landmarks — from grand palaces to the Danube river — this marathon combines history, architecture, and a calm, well-organised atmosphere. The organisers describe the course as mostly flat, making it a great choice for steady pacing, personal bests, or just soaking in a truly beautiful European capital. Check it out.
4. Rotterdam Marathon (Netherlands) – 12 April 2026

This one’s known for speed. The Rotterdam Marathon is often ranked among Europe’s fastest races, thanks to its extremely flat profile and streamlined route. With large, supportive crowds and a reputation for exceptional organisation, it's ideal for runners chasing a personal best — or anyone who enjoys a well-run, high-energy event without the mega crowds of the majors. 5. Helsinki City Marathon (Finland) – 16 May 2026

If you’re after a cooler spring climate and a scenic coastal route, Helsinki is worth the trip. The race takes runners through green parks and along the waterfront, finishing inside the city’s historic Olympic Stadium. It’s Finland’s largest marathon, but still feels welcoming and accessible. The course is mostly flat, and the combination of sea breeze and fresh air makes it feel calm and refreshing. Full race info here.
